Go For Broke
Go for broke is a phrase from Hawaiian Pidgin meaning "to wager everything".
It was the motto the World War II Nisei unit, the 442nd Infantry Regiment.
The story of this unit was largely ignored, until the 1951 film about it.
Japanese Americans were still treated with distrust within the USA
The Nisei however soon proved their worth -
Japanese American troops also used their language skills extensively
this patriotism and loyalty was not always recognised
Drunk History Season 2/7 on Hawaii covers Daniel Inouye - and his rejection before and after the war
Private Jerry Jiro Iwana's jacket
Nisei units suffered the highest casualty rate in the history of the US Army -
and were the most highly decorated
Despite this, Japanese Americans had a long fight for acceptance after the war ended...
